Installing an electric fence can be a great way to keep livestock contained or to secure your property. Here are the basic steps for installing an electric fence:
Materials Needed
- Electric fence charger (energizer)
- Fence wire (polywire, poly tape, or high-tensile wire)
- Fence posts (wood, metal, or plastic)
- Insulators (to prevent the wire from touching the posts)
- Ground rods
- Ground rod clamps
- Fence tester
- Warning signs (if the fence is near public areas)
How to Install
Establish the area you wish to fence before planning the layout of your fence.
The most important spots to mark are the locations of your corner and gate posts.
Calculate the separation between each post. Posts are normally placed 30 to 50 feet apart for temporary fences and 10 to 20 feet apart for permanent fences.
Install the Fence Posts: Firmly plant your corner posts in the earth using a post driver or post hole digger.
As you install the line posts, make sure they are straight and spaced equally along the designated plan.
Glue Insulators to Posts:
To stop the electric cable from hitting the posts and grounding out, attach insulators to each one.
Use screw-in insulators for wooden posts and wrap-around or clip-on insulators for metal posts.
Attach the fence wire:
Thread the wire through the insulators starting with the corner posts.
As you proceed, tighten the wire and fasten it to every post.
To keep the fence wire taut, use wire strainers or tensioners.
Put the Energizer in Place:
Install the energizer next to a power supply in a dry, protected area for the Electric fence installation & security systems.
Using a lead-out wire, attach the energizer to the fence wire.
Establish the Fence:
Plant ground rods in the ground close to the energizer, about ten feet apart.
Ground rod clamps and insulated ground wire are used to connect the ground rods to the energizer.
For the fence to function properly, make sure the ground system is strong.
Link the Energizer and Fence Together:
Connect the lead-out wire’s positive terminal on the energizer to one end and the fence wire to the other.
Connect the ground wire to the ground rods from the energizer’s negative terminal.
Evaluate the fence:
To verify the voltage along the fence line, use a fence tester.
Make sure the voltage is steady and within the range that your application specifies.
- Add Warning Signs:
- If your electric fence is near a public area or pathway, add warning signs to alert people to the presence of the electric fence.
Safety Tips
- Turn off the Energizer: Always turn off the energizer before working on the fence to avoid electric shocks.
- Wear Protective Gear: Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling fence wire and posts.
- Regular Maintenance: Regularly inspect the fence for any damage, fallen posts, or vegetation touching the wire, as these can affect its performance.
